Introduction to Floral Design 

In this series of two hour classes,  students will learn the basics of hydrating and preparing floral. In addition proportion, style, and color theory will be introduced. Each class will feature a different professional floral mechanic. Students will watch a demonstration and then be led through the design process to create their own floral arrangement. Learn about simple color theories. We will discuss analogous color and why it is a guiding principle at the Shy Flower. In addition we will discuss various flower shapes and why it is important to consider the shape of the flower as well as the color.

Each Friday we will have designers choice, seasonal hand tied bouquets at Hazel James Home in Winnetka and Double Clutch Brewery in Evanston. Preorder here and your Friday Flower Bouquet will be available for pick up on Friday during business hours! Growing and Cutting Your Own Flowers with Choosing Calm Farms

Ready to grow and harvest our own cut flowers? The Shy Flower is pleased to partner with Karin Fink of Choosing Calm Farms to offer this one of a kind class. 

Karin Fink will share her expertise and heirloom seeds so that you can grow unique varieties of our favorite flowers to create exceptional bouquets all summer long. She will coach you through the process from seed to flower. 

Lanie Coldwell will then step in with professional hydrating and arranging techniques to take all your cut flowers to the next level. 

With this knowledge in your toolbox you will be the envy of all your neighbors. 

Please note this is a 2.5 – 3 hour class. Light refreshments will be served.

Dahlia Class

We invite you to learn how to grow dahlias – the late diva of the summer/fall garden – with Choosing Calm flower farmer Karin Fink and The Shy Flower’s Lanie Coldwell. These will be hands on growing classes in Karin’s garden as she gets ready to plant hundreds of dahlia tubers along the sidewalk. Bring your gum boots in case you get dirty!!

Gardeners will receive 10 premium assorted dahlia tubers. You’ll have time to ask all your questions on planting, pest control, fertilizing, cloning if you are interested, seeds vs tubers and how to produce the most productive dahlia garden.

Class spots are very limited. Please visit the Shy Flower website starting tomorrow to purchase tickets.

Class will be Wednesday May 8th 10-11:30 AM. Location will be shared after ticket purchase.

Mother’s Day Tea & Petals

Please join the Shy Flower and Central Station Coffee on May 6th or May 7th as we host our annual Mother Day High Tea and Flower Arranging Class. All ages and mother child combinations are welcome. Gal Pals celebrating their escape from their children are welcome too! The event will open with a flower arranging class to share with your mother or special loved one. Once complete, high tea will be served. Professional, casual portraits and candids will be taken by the talented Carolyn Soling of Soling Photography. These digital portraits will be available for purchase.

The Practice of Flower Bathing

Join us for the Practice of Flower Bathing, a flower and meditation experience. Come experience the meditative power of flower arranging based on the Japanese practice of flower bathing. Lanie Coldwell of the Shy Flower will lead the floral arranging while Kristin Svets of Kristin Svets Coaching leads us through a meditative practice. You will leave with a clear, calm head and a beautiful arrangement to enjoy as you continue to practice the meditative skills learned.
